The Roxbury Adds American Film Institute's Top 100 Films to In-House DVD Library
ROXBURY, NY, March 14, 2005—The Roxbury has yet another new amenity to add to its growing list of cool comforts: DVD’s galore. What started with offering its guests a homegrown selection of 25 DVD’s to take to their rooms has now grown into over 300 movie titles including the most recent acquisition: American Film Institute’s “Top 100 Movies of all Time.”
“Our DVD library has grown into our most popular amenity by far,” said Gregory Henderson, co-owner of The Roxbury. “We started by offering just a few of our personal DVD’s to our guests. They enjoyed taking them to their room so much that we decided to keep adding to our library. We kept adding and adding until the collection outgrew the armoire we’ve been using to store them in! People now often call in advance and reserve the DVD’s that they want for their stay. We have the movies waiting for them in their room when they arrive.”
Joseph Massa, The Roxbury’s other co-owner added, “A good friend of ours had just acquired the American Film Institute’s (AFI) ‘Top 100 Films from the First Century of American Motion Pictures’ and after viewing them didn’t have room to store them in his house. He asked us if we wanted them and we said, are you kidding – of course we’ll take them! These movies are a real treasure to add to our collection. I just wish we had time to sit down and watch all of them – I’d love to view them in sequential order...”
In discussing the process used for the selection of the movies, AFI Director and CEO Jean Picker Firstenberg stated, “Through the collective judgment of leaders from across the American film community, from both in front of and behind the camera, AFI has identified 100 movies which set the standard and mark the excellence of the first century of American cinema. The top ten are:
1. Citizen Kane (1941); 2. Casablanca (1942); 3. The Godfather (1972); 4. Gone with the Wind (1939); 5. Lawrence of Arabia (1962); 6. The Wizard of Oz (1939); 7. The Graduate (1967); 8. On the Waterfront (1954); 9. Schindler’s List (1993); 10. Singin’ in the Rain (1952).”
