Perfect Winter Getaway: Roxbury Motel and Windham Mountain Ski Resort
February 18, 2012
Now that the madness of Fashion Week has passed us (I know you are exhausted) it is the perfect time for some R&R and time away from the City. Looking for a winter getaway? Why hop on a plane? Why drive for several hours to go north? Your vacation is just a few hours away right in your back yard! I had the pleasure of visiting one of the Catskills’ best kept secrets, and a truly remarkable “boutique motel” called the Roxbury Motel and Spa. I can’t begin to describe how in love I am with this property. Forget the Holiday Inn…forget your everyday generic boring run of the mill motel. The Roxbury has sophistication, it is absolutely unique, and is the most charming motel I have ever of stayed in.
The Roxbury brings chic to the Catskills, and is the perfect getaway for a New Yorker looking to get away from it all. Let me go over some of my favorite features of the motel.
-When you enter the lobby to check in you feel almost as if you are walking into someone’s apartment. There is a kitchen to your left (where they serve complementary continental breakfast that can be enjoyed in the adjoining kitchen),with a table with snacks and refreshments to your right which are available 24/7.
-As you walk in you will find a small office past the kitchen and a living room to your left equipped with board games, comfy couches, a fireplace and unique art displayed on the walls.
The best thing about the Roxbury is its unique themed rooms! Let’s talk about the suites!
There are eight unique suites. Each offers some similar and some very different amenities. The Shagadellic is the only suite with a fully-equipped kitchen. Upstairs Downstairs gives you the entire upstairs of the main house and therefore total privacy with no other units next to you. Genie’s Bottle and George’s Spacepad have out-of-this world bathing opportunities (complete with TV’s in the bathrooms). They also have interior adjoining doors so that a large group can rent out the entire floor. And how do we describe the lofted theme suites in the North Building. As far as The Final Frontier, The Noir Boudoir, and Amadeus’ Bride are concerned, more is more: Two bedrooms and two full baths; a large spiral staircase that takes you to the lofted bedroom and bathroom on the second floor; 85-gallon two-person soaking tubs with dual shower heads; cushy sofabeds that turn the living areas into a third bedroom; great views of the village and mountainscape, okay we’re getting wordy. Oh, and lest we forget, Miss Kitty’s Saloon with its red bordello opulence will bring out a little bit of sinner in all of us.
Let’s go over some of the suite amenities:
Free Netflix!!! YES Free Netflix!!
Free Wireless Internet
TV/DVD Player/DVD Library
Egyptian cotton towels
Luxury bathroom amenities (that smell amazing you will be tempted to purchase them)/li>
85-gallon two-person soaking tubs w/ dual showerheads
Internet-ready TV’s (North Bldg only)
Separate Wet Bar Sink Area
The most comfortable beds in the world!
There are also themed Big King rooms (including a room that looks and smells like a coconut pie, and a room themed after Charlies Angels with a mural of Farrah with 3d hair, and a Breakfast at Tiffany’s themed room that would make Audrey Hepburn proud) and Studio Rooms (with a room themed after The Flintstones thatactually looks like the inside of a cave!) to choose from. The detail in every room is amazing and unbelievable, down to the fun facts left in each room, to the custom wine glasses that fit each room’s them; And the wine selection is excellent! The motel is the winner of the “Traveler’s choice Award” (naturally), and is the brainchild of the owners Greg and Jeff who transformed the property into a magical dream like oasis.
There are two spas on the property one featuring a hot tub, and the other a steam room, relation room, and library, and healthy snacks. The spa is equipped with toiletries and spa hopping is encouraged! The owners say the hotel is never finished, that each room can always be improved. There is even talk of them building an Indiana Jones themed cottage! How amazing is that!? Check their Facebook page for more updates.
This may be an odd observation, however I remember how wonderful the hotel smelled- delightful smells seemed to be coming from ever direction, and the staff is super friendly. It was so peaceful and serene. And when I panicked and needed to get in touch with people I didn’t have to worry about poor telephone reception because the hotel is equipped with cell phone booster spots. I could go on and on, but you must visit the property yourself to really take in how magnificent it is.
And the hotel is affordable with rates ranging from $99 to around $300. And, they have a special package where you buy two midweek nights and the third is FREE. They have additional packages like romantic getaways, and wine and cheese packages as well.
