The Inn Crowd: Over the past few years, we’ve traveled across America in search of great bargains. What’ve we learned? The quality of food at a roadside diner is inversely proportional to its cleanliness, and coffee is one of God’s great creations. That, and gone are the days when budget lodging meant a lumpy mattress, thin towels and the sort of carpet you find on airplanes. From a historic landmark in the mountains of Wyoming to a replica of Britney’s bedroom in Boston, each of our favorite spots offers its own unique brand of hospitality. So check out (and check into) the places on this list, and sleep like royalty while paying a pauper’s price.

#2: The Roxbury! Roxbury, NY

Bucking the cutesy B&B scene in the Catskills, The Roxbury is a dash of big-city flash in the country. Formerly a fleabag motor lodge, it was snapped up by two New York City theater expats, who promptly redid the property in vivid colors and ’60s-mod-meets-21st-century style. All 11 rooms have high-speed Internet, fridges, microwaves and DVD players. BONUS: The front desk stocks more than 300 flicks, including the American Film Institute’s top 100 movies of all time. (
